There are two basic motivations
for weight loss. One is for health reasons and the other is more
personal; having to do with how we feel about ourselves, our bodies
and our self-esteem. Maintaining
a healthy weight and eating well are both done for the same reasons
one exercises, doesn’t smoke, drinks The other motivators for weight loss are often less discussed because they are more personal or psychological. When someone is unhappy with his or her body and concerned with being over weight, it often becomes a social barrier. Many people avoid activities because they feel unfit and thus unworthy. Many physical and social activities are suspended because of a low self-image. They avoid places where they will be exposed, like the beach or the gym. They also avoid relationships, intimacy and even searching for jobs. Some typical comments are “When I get thin, I’ll start to exercise, I’ll meet someone, I’ll find a better job”. These strong inhibitions often lead to depression, thus compounding the initial weight problem. Being over weight is not a minor problem and should never be disregarded. The medical profession is taking it more seriously, as it affects both the physical and psychological well-being of the individual.
