A
number of different factors are responsible for putting on weight and
need to be systematically narrowed down and analyzed. Understanding
how fatty cells grow is the key to understanding weight gain or loss.
Insulin allows sugar and fat to enter the fatty cells causing their
volume to increase. The key to weight control is limiting the amounts
of insulin, fat and sugar. All diets act on these three factors.
Without insulin, sugar and fat cannot
penetrate the cell. Without these three elements, the fatty cells do not
increase in volume. Scientists are becoming more concerned with the
glycemic index
of food then of the calorie content. For example; 1000 calories coming
from oysters and 1000 calories from doughnuts will not be stored in the
body the same way.
The calories from the oysters are burned immediately,
whereas the calories from the sugar and fat rich donuts become stored in
the fatty cells. The glycemic index is non-existent for oysters and very
high in doughnuts. The latter, by the massive arrival of sugar, triggers
the insulin output which then allows the sugar and fat to enter the
fatty cell increasing its volume.
To avoid insulin output, it is important to
maintain the blood sugar level by eating smaller portions regularly
throughout the day. It is the massive arrival of sugar that triggers the
insulin output. This explains why starvation diets are not successful or
healthy. It is simple, the greater is the hunger, the more insulin will
collect and store any fat and sugar it receives.
