Health and life threatening problems associated to obesity

Obesity is negatively associated with diabetes, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis, cancer, gallstones, and sleep apnea. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 61% of American adults are overweight or obese -- a 5% increase in prevalence since 1994. In response to this trend, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has expanded its 2010 health objectives to include a goal of reducing the prevalence of obesity to less than 15% among U.S. adults over the next decade.

For people with weight problems, cardiovascular disease accounts for 32% of all deaths. description

Excess weight, cholesterol and sedentary habits cause obstruction of the arteries. The more the arteries are clogged, the less oxygen reaches the cells, causing damage to the organs. This develops into hypertension, coronary problems and cardiac and renal failure.

Being overweight is sometimes associated with gall stones, sterility  and joint problems, particularly in the back, knees and hips.
